Cypress
Sea Boat Dives
January 2003, Carmel & South

Most
everywhere on the Central to Northern California Coast, it was cold
& foggy. That is, except Saturday night at Breakwater Cove in Monterey.
We arrived at 7:00pm, coming out of the fog to find a starry sky and
a calm ocean! Everyone was already there and ready for the night dive
including a couple from Chicago. This was their first cold water night
dive.
Viability
was 25ft + ! The dive went well. We found a few octopi and saw large
rock fish everywhere. Lots of baby fish were hanging out in the kelp.
Nudibranchs and anemones were everywhere. At night, with all the night
animals out, the area is completely different then during the day.
Sunday
morning we met the Cypress Sea at 7:30am. As we cruised out of the bay
we encountered a few whales. During the cruise south to the pinnacles
more whales were spotted. The dive at the outer Pinnacles was fantastic
with visibility over 40 feet. The walls were full of life. When you
dive here don't for get a small light to help light up all the colors.
Moving
down to the south of Point Lobos for another deep dive many more whales
were spotted. Flukes were numerous. We encountered very large Sheeps
Heads and actually saw some small Abalone. It's as if the area is healing
and many more species are growing and becoming healthy again as compared
to previous years.
On
the way back to the wharf, still along the coast between Carmel Bay
& Monterey Bay we were joined by a pod of Pacific Whit Sided Dolphins.
They cruised in front of the Cypress Sea at about 9kts. We got several
pictures but only a few good ones. It's very hard to shoot digital with
moving subjects but when you get a clear picture it's a good one!
